With the growing trend toward Broadband and Wireless Networking. I feel I had better explain a few points. The M.A.C. Address. As a minimum the MAC address needs to be set. The MAC address is a series of 12 alpha numeric figures seperated in pairs by a colon e.g. xx : xx : xx etc. Each MAC address is unique to every network device. Hence once the MAC address is set on the Router no other device can access the network without permission or serious hacking. If the MAC address is incorporated with a unique password then it is damn near impossible to access the network. SSID. Disable or hide the SSID as well if possible. If they dont know what your network is called it will be veru difficult to find! W.E.P. Encryption. Of all the encryption rountines WEP is the lowest and that is 64 bit encryption. There is a choice of 1 to 4 keys. If that is not secure enough there is the option of 128 bit encryption or an increased level of protection labled TKIP. If these measures are ALL incorporated then you will be secure from the most determined hacker. |
